Lemon family of Carclew 
     He was elected mayor of Truro in 1737, became a 
magistrate, and was appointed sheriff in 1742. His early life had not 
provided an opportunity for an extensive education, and after his 
move to Truro he engaged the master of the grammar school there 
to teach him. His character and his wealth were greatly respected 
and he became known as "the Great Mr. Lemon". He and his son 
purchased property in and around Truro, including the Great House, 
Carclew, Bosvigo in Kenwyn, Penelewey in Kea, and lands in Feock 
and St. Justin-Roseland, also Tolver in Gulval (his wife's home), and 
the manor of Tregarne Condurrow in St. Anthony-in-Meneage, St. 
Keverne and Manaccan, for which he paid £3,600.
